What is Microdosing or the sub-threshold dose?

Microdosing is a process used in pharmacology when developing drugs and using a miniature dose of a substance to assess its pharmacokinetics as a drug.

In the psychedelic community, a microdose is a dose that is below a very low dose. It is usually one-tenth to one-twentieth of a recreational dose and varies from one substance to another.
Usually, that could be 5 to 10% of a usual psychoactive dose.

These doses of course vary from one person to another, and this is why microdosing is seen as a personal and self-tailored experience.

Thus, the term ‘microdosing’ appears to consist of three components:

  1. The use of a low dose below the perceptual threshold that doesnot impair‘normal’ functioning of an individual.
  2. A procedure that includes multiple dosing sessions.
  3. The intention to improve well-being and enhance cognitive and/or emotional processes.

Pharmacokinetic is the way the drug moves and acts within our bodies (how long effects last, how our body reacts, etc…) from the roots pharmaco: drug-medicine-poison, and kinetic: the science of movement.

Although the use of the term microdosing, in regard to psychedelics,  has not yet been scientifically agreed on, it has made its roots in societal use and therefore it is considered and recognized as a popular definition.

What can microdosing help with?

Albert Hofmann, the scientist who first synthesised LSD in 1938, was well conscious of psychedelics’ potential to transform attitudes to nature, writing shortly before his death in 2008, aged 101, that:

“Alienation from nature and the loss of the experience of being part of the living creation is the greatest tragedy of our materialistic era. It is the causative reason for ecological devastation and climate change. Therefore, I attribute absolute highest importance to consciousness change. I regard psychedelics as catalysers for this.”
