PSILOCYBE THAIDUPLICATOCYSTIDIATA
Psilocybe thaiduplicatocystidiata is a species of psilocybin mushroom in the family Hymenogastraceae. It was described as new to science in 2012 by renown Mexican mycologist Gaston Guzmán and his colleagues. Psilocybe thaiduplicatocystidiata was growing in the park of the university in Chiang Mai.
Psilocybe thaiduplicatocystidiata, alongside Psilocybe thaicordispora and Psilocybe thaiaerugineomaculans, are subtropical rainforest mushrooms that depict perfectly the rich and unexplored mycota of Thailand.
It is a special member of the section Cordisporae Guzmán because it has been observed to have two types of both pleurocystidia and cheilocystidia, one as pseudocystidia, a feature said to not have been previously observed in that section. Its epithet “thaiduplicatocystidiata” translates this unique characteristic along with the location it originally was described in: Thailand.
It is said to have similarities to P. caerulescens Murrill, and P. wrightii Guzmán, both species are only known from the neotropics. The psychotronic fungal species in Thailand, as in most tropical countries, are poorly known, a drastic contrast to the richness of the mycoflora. With considerable destruction of tropical habitats, many species will likely disappear before being documented.
Guzmán and his team noted that on a five-day excursion, they found four new species yet none of the five species previously reported from the country.
This demonstrates the complexity of mushroom fructification and at same time the richness of the mycota in the tropics. They confirmed that species of Psilocybe of section Cordisporae, Mexicanae, Stuntzae, and Zapotecorum are tropical or subtropical.
